About ALUCA

ALUCA was formally founded in 1986 and is proud to have a great history of development since its humble beginnings. In 2006 we reached an important milestone - membership numbers tipped the scales at 1,000 and continue to grow.

LIFE MEMBERS
ALUCA now has several Life Members, appointed to acknowledge their significant contribution to ALUCA and to the life insurance area of the Financial Services industry. Details of Life Members are included on the ALUCA Honour Roll which may be accessed from the members only section.

2009 DAVID MICÓ AWARD
In 2005 ALUCA established and launched a Research Paper competition. The intention was to encourage members at all levels to share the benefits of their observations, research, knowledge and thoughts relating to our great industry - regardless of whether it was learned from within or outside of the industry. We have a great belief in the skills and expertise of all our members, regardless of their longevity in the industry, and we felt this could be a wonderful opportunity for those talents to be showcased.

One of the best talents and greatest contributors to our industry was David Mico, who we sadly lost at the end of 2007. In honour of David's memory, and as a tribute to his extensive involvement in so many facets of our industry throughout the years, the ALUCA National Committee has decided to rename this competition - "The David Micó Award".

Having spent much time working for insurance companies, the latter part of David's career involved a responsibility for the Life & Risk issues at IFSA where he was the Senior Policy Manager for this area. This role allowed David to have a lot of contact with interest groups, legislators and regulators all of whom have a big influence on what we do in underwriting and claims. It was an area where David, in the opinion of many within and outside the industry, excelled. David's detailed technical background and his ability to engage with others in a strong and sympathetic manner meant that he and IFSA achieved many successes. In the view of many within the industry this was crucial in maintaining the balance between the freedom to underwrite applications and assess claims fairly, and the needs of the community at large.

David was a great supporter of ALUCA and its aims and he set a standard for all of us to follow. It is wonderfully appropriate, therefore, that this award be named in his honour.

Further details may be found in the Members Only section.
